How Did D-Day Impact World War 2?
Website #1 mainly discussed the importance of D-Day, and its opening a second front in World War 2. "D-Day forced the Germans to fight a two front war again just as they had in WWI. Yet again the Germans could not handle war on both sides of them." (website #1). The Attack on German-Occupied France was unexpected, and well planned. "The Allies had won the battle and began the ending of WWII." (website #1, pg. c). The Second front drained German resources and eventually forced their giving up the war effort. "On June 26th, 1944 the Allies captured the French port of Cherbourg. After that day, the Germans began to retreat." (website #1). Website #1's main purpose is to stress the importance of D-Day to the war effort.
Website #2 also talks about how D-Day set the war on a shorter timescale. "After D-DAY, the days of the German resistance were numbered" (website #2). After D-Day, the allies were in a good position to push German forces back. They began to liberate Paris from German control. "Paris was liberated in August 1944 as the Allies pushed slowly eastward." (website #2). The war was finally working in the Allies favor. They could now moving up towards the German border, and began working towards the epicenter of German control. "Soon the Americans, British, and Free French found themselves racing the Soviets to Berlin." (website #2). This website shows how D-Day swung the Allies war effort into control of the war.
Website #3 talks about how significant D-Day was to the direction of World War 2. "The Normandy invasion began to turn the tide against the Nazis." (website #3). This battle positioned Allied forces for a direct attack on Germany. "The Allied forces then prepared to enter Germany, where they would meet up with Soviet troops moving in from the east." (website #3). It also assisted the Soviets on their front, which until then had been a difficult battle. "...it also prevented Hitler from sending troops from France to build up his Eastern Front against the advancing Soviets." (website #3). Website #3 is basically focused on the help this battle gave to the Allies war effort.
